Three Updates That Differentiate Instagram Stories From Snapchat

New Features Come to Instagram Stories

When Instagram Stories launched in August, the comparison to Snapchat was instant. Both let you post content with the idea that the videos and images can only be viewed for 24 hours. After the time limit, they're no longer accessible. This episodic style keeps audiences engaged while encouraging viewership with a sense of urgency.

The imitation game has come full circle, with Snapchat now adding some of Instagram's more popular features, like the ability to rewind. Competition breeds improved user experience, but what I'm really looking forward to is each platform finding its niche.

Instagram has made its biggest step towards differentiating their platform since its launch. Three brand-new features are ready to add new elements to your Stories.

  1. People have been writing in @mentions manually into their Instagram Stories from the beginning, and Instagram took notice. Now the tags will link to the specified account, sending the person you tagged a direct message letting them know.
  2. Links will have a similar benefit as Snapchat Discover, leading you to stories and articles. The biggest difference is that this tool will be open to accounts beyond advertisers and publishers. Think about how a musician could post a link to their new song, or a blogger could share access to their latest post. This is in beta version for now, but will be available after a trial version with verified users.
  3. Boomerang is already a popular tool to create GIF-like loops for Instagram, and early adopters to Instagram Stories have been uploading the animations from the camera roll. Now you'll be able to create boomerangs directly within Instagram Stories, without needing to toggle between apps. Within Instagram Stories, slide your finger to the right to switch from normal camera mode to boomerang mode.

Maybe we have room in our phones for both apps after all?
